Cooper Lighting Centralised Battery System

A Centralised Battery System (CBS) or Centralised Supply System (CSS) is an emergency back-up power supply used to power emergency lighting systems. A CBS or CSS can also be used to provide standby power for automatic fire extinguisher systems, alarms, smoke extraction, access detection, carbon monoxide monitoring and security systems. A Centralised Battery System has to confirm to EN50171 and meet a number of criteria

A Centralised Battery System provides standby power from an internal battery set that is automatically charged when mains power is present. The use of a CBS reduces emergency power system set-up and maintenance costs but the system will require periodic inspection, battery testing and battery replacement. The main advantages of central battery systems over distributed self-contained systems include:

  • Testing and maintenance is much easier to carry out
  • Battery replacement is much quicker and less disruptive
  • Battery life is generally 10 years or more
  • Luminaires can be centrally controlled
  • High light levels can easily be achieved
  • The emergency lighting system can be completely unobtrusive

UPS Systems Cannot Be Used For Central Supply Systems

UK Building Regulations and the Fire Safety Order explained in government guideline documents call for emergency lighting systems to be installed to BS 5266-1 with a runtime of 1hour or 3hours. This standard calls up BS EN 50171 for Central Systems and identifies certain characteristics that a standard IT configured UPS system cannot meet.

  • Recharge time to 80% within 12 hours
  • 10 year battery deslgn life for systems greater than 500W for 1h and 1500W for 3h
  • Full runtime duration at end of battery life and 120Vdc battery strings
  • 120% overload capability without bypass (no mains supply present)
