When you install a UPS or standby generator system you are putting in place a device that will need maintenance if it is to be relied upon. Preventative maintenance is all about look after key areas of your critical power device and especially consumable items like batteries in the UPS or the fuel (and starter battery) in a standby power generator.

Prime power generation is the continuous supply of power from a generating set for a long period and as the primary source of power. This will typically apply to installations that have decided to generate their own power and go ‘Off-The-Grid’. Sometimes this can occur in remote locations and rural areas of the developing world. Standby power generators have a single-point-of-failure; their starter battery. When charged this provides power to the alternator when the mains power fails. These batteries are either open vented (wet flooded) cells which require routine inspection and maintenance or automative-type lead acid. For either type, regular testing, inspection and maintenance is required to ensure generating set start-up.

Standby generators run intermittently when started-up in response to a mains power failure. Often standby power generators are undersized leading to a failure when the generator tries to ‘pick-up’ a load in excess of its rating. As part of a power protection strategy it is vital to ensure size the generator correctly to avoid overloads and match it to future capacity plans. This will also help to ensure the generator itself reaches its planned for life expectancy and avoids unnecessary maintenance or repair costs.
